Baltimore chiropractor Andrew Fagan will be off to South Korea with the Canadian national team in September after winning the NFAA National Field Championships in the adult men’s freestyle division last weekend in Pennsylvania.

The three-day competition — this year held in Mechanicsburg, Pa., from July 18 to 20 — takes place annually each July.

Archers from nearly every state in the U.S., as well as international archers from Canada and Europe, took part in the competition.

It was tight competition for Fagan, 39, throughout the weekend. After the first day, he was tied with an archer from Texas for second place with a score of 554/560. In first place, an archer from Pennsylvania had a three-point lead with a 557.

“I was satisfied with my first-day score, but knew I could do better in the following days,” Fagan said.

At the beginning of Day 2, peer grouping started to allow Fagan to be part of the top group of four archers in his class.

“Being able to shoot with the other top guys helped push me,” he said. “I ended up tying my personal best with a score of 559/560.”

Day 2 also had periods of heavy rain, causing some archers to drop points, but Fagan was able to stay clean through these periods, allowing him to move into first place. By the end of the day, he held a five-point lead.

Day 3 was a shorter day of competition. Fagan was able to extend his lead further, winning by a decisive 11 points at the completion of the event.

Archers winning the NFAA Field Championships win a trophy called the “silver bowl.”

“Winning a silver bowl is an incredible feeling. It’s something I can look back at 20 or 30 years down the road and be proud. NFAA field championships is a long three-day grind … to win one is an honour.”

Fagan is a full-time chiropractor with a young family living in the Baltimore area, just north of Cobourg. He enjoys spending time with his family while also looking after his 30-acre property.

To compete at an international level, he says, he wakes up daily at 3 a.m., seven days a week, to train. He shoots 100 arrows a day and does resistance training at the local gym, all before going to work.

“My training schedule can be difficult, but sacrifices are necessary for results in this sport. For me this is the best way to put the time in for training and not take time away from my family and work.”

Fagan will be travelling to South Korea with the Canadian national team in September to compete at the World Archery Target Championships.

Fagan has been a member of the Canadian national team since 2007. He has competed at the Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cup circuit and numerous world championships.

He is a world championship medalist, a World Cup multiple time medalist and holds numerous Canadian records.
